A blimp is a version of a dirigible, it is non-rigid and is kept in shape only by the hydrogen or helium inside it. those are the only gases lighter than air, so they float through a high-oxygen atmosphere. a blimp is usually propelled through the air by a large fan.

Have you ever wondered why boats and blimps are both said to float?

The reason is because they both operate on the same simple principle, bouyancy.

The idea behind bouyancy is that, if i were to grab two large bottles of equal size, and fill one with air and the other with water, there would be a large weight difference between the two. If you were then to place both bottles in a bath tub and measure how much force it took to make the bottles sink and compare this to the weight of these bottles you would notice that the force it took to sink the bottle full of air is the same as the weight of the bottle of water.

This is because the force of an object wanting to float, bouyancy, is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by that object.

Essentially a blimp is filled with a gas that weighs less than air, because this gas weighs less than the air it is displacing it will try to float, lifting the blimp up with it.

What is buoyancy and how does it affect a blimp?

buoyancy is a measure of how well an object will float in a given medium, eg: a boat in water. similarly for a blimp, the blimp is the object, the air is the medium. if it is not buoyant enough, it will not 'float' in the air, aka fly
