Sephiroth was a war hero that Cloud idolized as a child. Hoping to be like him one day, Cloud tried to join Soldier. He was sent on a mission to Nibelheim as support to Sephiroth and Zack. In the reactor on Mt. Nibel, Sephiroth learned the truth about his birth and went mad. He burned Nibelheim, which was Cloud's hometown, to the ground and nearly killed Zack and Tifa. Cloud confronted Sephiroth, being injured in the process, and was able to turn Sephiroth's attack back on him. Because of Cloud's interference, Sephiroth was humiliated and his plan to 'take back the world for Jenova' was interrupted. This is pretty much all the interaction that the two had before the start of the game.

Cloud's hatred of Sephiroth was first born when Sephiroth burnt down Nibelheim - Cloud's hometown. After learning of the experiments that made him, Sephiroth destroyed the city... setting it completely alight. Cloud chased him to the Nibelheim reactor - where he found Sephiroth had overpowered both Tifa and Zack... both important people to Cloud. From then on, he viewed Sephiroth as evil - he fought the SOLDIER 1st, stabbing him through the midsection... but, was stabbed by Masamune. Sephiroth escaped with Jenova's head. That was where his hatred was born - it was then developed through Sephiroth's mental manipulation of Cloud, his torturing of the blonde and his threats to Cloud's friends. In short, he just knew exactly how to push Cloud's buttons and make him hate him.
