Dia de los Muertos is a celebration lasting for several days that has its origins in pre-Hispanic times. It is religious or spiritual in nature, honoring the souls of deceased relatives and friends. While there is humor in the celebrations, there is a serious undertone to the holiday.

Cinco de Mayo celebrates the military victory of the Mexican army on May 5, 1862. The Mexicans scored a surprise win over the French forces at Puebla, Pue. on that date. The battle raised the spirits of the Mexicans who had been routinely defeated by the vastly superior French forces. That is why it is celebrated so - because it was a victory of the underdog. It is a symbol of Mexican pride.
