Many times, singer and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong comes up with songs while taking walks. He incorporates what is going on in his life and mind into the songs. For instance, he wrote "Brainstew" when he was trying to get his son to go to sleep. "Welcome to Paradise" was written after he and fellow band mate, bassist Mike Dirnt, left their homes at a young age. "21st Century Breakdown" is essentially a story of his life, beginning with his childhood and ending with where Green Day are today and what they have been through.
Other times like with the song "Homecoming", Mike came up with the part "Nobody Likes You" when Billie Joe and drummer Tre Cool had other personal business to attend to and Mike was left alone in the recording studio. Also the part "Rock 'n' Roll Girlfriend" in "Homecoming" was written by Tre. After listening to all the parts they had, they bundled them together to create the 9-minute long song.
