simple rule is that the more s character in the hybrid orbital the smaller it is and therefore the shorter the bond it will make. Soem of the shortening observed in double bonds is due to this effect. sp shorter than sp2 shorter than sp3

Why do alkyl halides undergo the nucleophlic subtitution reaction?

haloarenes are less reactive than haloalkanes because: 1. resonance effect more the resonatinsg structures, more the stability 2.difference in hybridisation of the C-X bond i.e.,in haloalkanes, the hybridisation is sp3 whereas in haloarenes it is sp2 hybridised. As sp2 is more electronegative therefore bond length is shorter and hence stronger. these are the major reasons.

Which type of hybridization is present in ethanol?

The hybridisation of carbon is sp3- the bond angles around carbon are all tetrahedral. The COH bond angle is a little less than tetrahedral (lone pair replusion- according to VSEPR theory)- sp3 hybridisation is a good approximation.

Steps to form a covalent bond?

In valence bond theory the steps include hybridisation followed by the formation of resonanace forms which are then assumed to form an overall resonance hybrid bonds.

What is the hybridization of BeCl2?

In molecular BH3 the molecule is planar with bond angles of 120o so the hybridisation of the central boron atom is sp2. In the dimer B2H6 the molecule has two bridging hydrogens. The hybridisation of each boron is approxomately sp3 and each bridge has a 3 centre B-H-B bond formed by the overlap of the sp3 orbtals on the B atoms and the s orbital on the hydrogen.

What is partial double bond character?

Double bonds are rarely called partial, when the term is usesd it often means that the overlp of orbitals in the pi bond is poor and the effect of this second bond on bond strnegth and length is small.

What is the trend between bond length and bond strength?

The shorter the length the stronger the bond.

How the hybridization of c atoms in c-c single bond of HC---C-CH--CH2 is sp3-sp?

The compound HCCCHCH2 contains a triple bond and a double bond. Working along the molecule left to right the hybridisation of the carbon atoms is:-sp ;sp ; sp2 ; sp2The formula for a 4 carbon chain containing an sp3 - sp single bond would beHCCCH2CH3where the hybridisation left to right issp ; sp ; sp3 ; sp3

What are hybridisation schemes?

The mixing of atomic orbitals is called hybridisation.
