One could make a character map by simply arranging locations of the different characters, and then making a map on a sheet of paper by drawing where those characters reside.

One way - is to find the relevant letter in the Character Map - and copy & paste it into your document (or whatever file you're working on). In Windows 7, the character map is found by pressing Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools.
Go to Insert Symbol and you can do it from the character sets you will find there. You can also use the Character Map facility in Windows to copy the character into Excel.
Start>All Programs> Accessories> System Tools>Character Map Character Map will show you all the characters that are in a font. the glyph "ə" has no keystroke assigned to it, so you'll have to double click it and copy and paste it out of Character Map.
All the characters are listed in the Character Map. Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map. Each Font has different characters. Some characters have a keystroke in the lower right corner that you can use to make them. For the rest you have to select the character by clicking it and then clicking "select." Click "Copy" and paste it where you want it.

Use the "TAB" key to bring the Map up. Select one of the character's names. Use the back button to close the Map. A series of footsteps will appear in front of you. Follow them to the character.
