It depends if the server is using domain name based hosting or ip based hosting. With domain based hosting, many domains are hosting on a single IP address, ex.
www.domain1.com, www.domain2.com, www.domain3.com could be hosted on a single ip address, with most webservers, if you go to the IP address directly, you will either get a error, or the first virtual site that is setup will display, this is the easier way of hosting, as IP addresses are somewhat expensive. With IP based hosting, each site uses a dedicated address, with the examples above each site would have its own address and you could visit it easily that way.
