I'm glad you asked this question, because I was just talking about this to my AA group members yesterday. Peer pressure has quite the influence on teenage promiscuity. If everyone "does it", then tells you that you should too, then you are extremely affected. Try this scenario... Johnny: So Laura, wanna go out tonight? Laura: Oh, sure Johnny! Where would you like to go? Johnny: Well, I was thinking Lookout Point. Laura: But...isn't that...where people..."do it"? Johnny: Well, yeah. Laura: I don't think that I'm ready for that kind of promiscuity yet. Johnny: Well, everyone's doing it! C'mon! I'll tell everyone that you're still a virgin. Laura: Well....then I guess we could. Tada! That's how peer pressure influences teenage promiscuity. Now, go fill the pathetic void in your life by playing Whack-A-Mole seventeen hours a day.

In The Bible, the equivalent to peer pressure would be the "fear of man".

Proverbs 29:25 (NIV) - "Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe."

The fear that it is talking about here, is not a morbid fear, but instead a fear of displeasing. The Bible instructs it's followers to "fear God and keep his commandments." (Ecclesiastes 12:13,14) This is the same type of "fear" that one would experience with peer pressure, but in relation to not wanting to displease God. If we truly have a fear of displeasing God, because we care what he thinks and feels about us, we will be much more likely to listen to him.

The same goes for peer pressure and the fear of man. If we really place great importance on what other people think and feel about us, and are always trying to please the crowd, we will make choices and decisions based on that desire to please. This has led many people into doing things they would not normally do, or did not want to do themselves, but did do in order to please someone else. However, very rarely does this type of pleasing people ever work out to a person's benefit. It is often a snare that leads to trouble just as the Bible says it would be.
