The high energy particles (alpha and beta radiation) and electromagnetic waves (gamma radiation) damage large molecules in cells, which usually kills or badly damages the cells themselves. If cells die on such large scale it can lead to multiple organ failure. radiation damage to skin cells often becomes a sort of burn.

In smaller doses radiation can still damage DNA, which can lead to cancer.

I believe radiation makes you feel nauseous, have headaches, hallucinate at high levels, etc. Basically radiation is equivelant to a reeeally bad fever or cold. If you believe you have radiation sickness please see a doctor. You can get enough radiation from MRI's or catscans to make you nauseous. You can also get radiation from microwave ovens and X-rays but X-rays you don't have to worry about. Microwaves however, can be dangerous if you stand by one while it's cooking for a long time or long times over a couple days. *I'm only a 12 year old student so parts of this may not be exactly correct.*

The effects that radioactive elements produce on humans are based on the ionizing radiation. This radiation causes damage to the DNA which can may not be able to be repaired.
