In sandy regions stunted oak trees are referred to as "scrub oaks" or "turkey oaks". They get approximately one-fifth normal size. Two plants that overcome this problem are mangroves and bamboo. Their root systems are so dense that even though they grow in sandy soil, hurricanes have little effect on them.
