Sand drains much more readily than those with clay and organic matter. This means the plant does not get as much water in sandy soil. Neither does sand contain many nutrients. Typically, plants that grow naturallyin sandy soil can withstand low levels of both water and nutrients. Often sands can be acidic, and can become non-wetting, which further reduces the amount of available water.

IN ADDITION:The plants that grow in sand will not grow fast or tall in an act of self preservation. Trees that do not get a firm foothold in the soil will not reach its normal mature height and are more subject to being uprooted during a storm. This is because most trees send out tap roots to reach a firmer soil type or even clay, like most pines. In sandy areas, they get a tighter root ball to hold this sandy soil together. In sandy regions stunted oak trees are referred to as "scrub oaks" or "turkey oaks". They get approximately one-fifth normal size. Two plants that overcome this problem are mangroves and bamboo. Their root systems are so dense that even though they grow in sandy soil, hurricanes have little effect on them.
