By horse.
Santa, or Sinterklaas, travels on a horse. Kids leave out their shoes with gifts for the horse and they are replaced with presents.
This has to do with a Dutch tradition. They leave shoes by the fireplace, so that Sinterklaas will fill it with presents and/or candy. This is done in the period until the fifth of december, which is called Pakjesavond (Evening of presents). That night, Sinterklaas and his 'Zwarte Pieten' deliver gifts to all children that have been good in the past year.
Saint Nicholas of Myra, a Christian bishop from the 4th century, is the first known 'Santa Claus' to distribute gifts. There are also stories of Sinterklaas in the Netherlands and Holland.
Sinterklaas
No, the Netherlands don't have a Santa Claus. During Christmas there are no gifts under the tree. On the 5th of December Dutch people have a holiday called 'Sinterklaas' where a Santa Claus like man brings around gifts.
Holland has a St. Nicolas, which is called 'Sinterklaas' and visits Holland from Spain every year on December 5th and brings gifts for children, but also a man who drops by at Christmas, named 'Kerstman' (Christmas man). Sinterklaas is a more popular tradition in Holland. And even in the olden days "Sinterklaas" was celebrated in England and other countries, later this changed into Santa Claus. Also, "Sinterklaas" has different sweets/candy and a huge parade every year. And instead of hanging a sock, Dutch people "zetten hun schoen" (place their shoes) He is also called Santa Claus.
In Holland, Sinterklaas (or Santa Clause) arrives by ship with gifts for the children. Those who have been good will receive chocolate and other gifts in their shoes, while those who have been bad get coal or sticks instead. See related link to read more.
Candy baskets are a fun way to send gifts to those who have a sweet tooth. These are a few companies that offer this service: Candy Blast and Candygram. For more than just candy, there is Gourmet Gift Baskets and Proflowers.
When distributing gifts in Holland St Nicholas is accompanies by Black Pete. Black Pete is the one to actually give out the gifts.
St. Nicholas or as we call it 'Sinterklaas' is a holiday for kids, so usually toys.
