It can be caused from major volcanic eruptions such as the one that occured in 1991 (Mount Pinatubo).

During the eruption, the mountain ejected millions of tons of sulphur dioxide gas which when let off in the atmosphere mixes with water and oxygen to create sulphuric acid.

The earth's climate was affected by the sulphur dioxide that was discharged into the atmosphere. This meant that the temperature worldwide would increase for a few years after the eruption took place.
