The VTOL system of the F-35 consists of a turbofan engine and a Rolls-Royce LiftSystem.
The exhaust nozzle of the turbofan rotates to turn downward, directing the thrust in such a direction. The engine also powers the LiftSystem which a vertical compressor located just behind the cockpit, sheltered behind upper and lower bay doors.
Additionally, some exhaust is ported to each wing tip in order to aid stabilization and balance.

Take off vertically, land vertically, and hover in mid-air
Yes it can. However it cannot land vertically at high speed, it must latterally land. The Harrier's versatility makes it ideal for limited space landings.
Helicopters can land and takeoff vertically and also hover in flight. Winged aircraft can not do these things.
Vertical means straight up and down, aligned with the direction of gravity. Vertically upward means vertical in the up direction. So if you jump directly straight up that is vertically upward; when you land you are travelling vertically downward.
The F35 programme is intended to produce three varieties of one aircraft, with the intent that the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps will each field their variant.

No, a warthog jet cannot land vertically. The Warthog, officially known as the A-10 Thunderbolt II, is a fixed-wing aircraft that lands conventionally on a runway. It does not have Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) capabilities like some other aircraft such as the Harrier jet.
