Wrong. You don't have to turn and push only turn, the retraction of the piston occurs from the turning action. The rear brakes are attached to the parking brake and unlike the front brakes the rear piston of the caliper is threaded b/c the parking brake ratchets down the caliper locking it.

You can use needle nose pliers to turn the cross-hatched section or do get the right tool for free from Autozone or Advance Auto. Rent the set for free from those guys and get a device that looks like a C-clamp but has a two pronged head on it which grips inside the cross-hatched section of the piston so it can turned in. Remember to turn clockwise and having a 12" pipe to provide leverage for those tight pistons.

I just did my rear brakes on 10/5/08 and both calipers had problems. One side had a stuck sliding bolt which inhibits caliper movement and proper brake function. The other side was a total nightmare b/c the piston was locked; no turning would retract it. I finally resorted to a 12" C-Clamp and pushed it back in...to get the brakes back on for work Monday. This is not good b/c the threads in the piston are locked up=new caliper ~$40. If anyone else does this job be aware that you will probably find more problems than just worn pads and rotors. Start early on a weekend to give adequate time for issues that WILL pop up. Good Luck!

it has to turn and pushed at the same time

How do i change the front brakes on a 1992 Nissan pickup?

Changing brakes is a pretty simple task. Lift the car, remove the tire, brake shoe/caliper and remove the old pad. Put in the new pad, replace the brake shoe/caliper, put the tire back on and lower the car.

How do you replace brakes on a 94 Dodge shadow?

Front brakes or back> front is really simple, when you take the caliper off, the caliper is held on with 2 1/2 bolts... the rotor will come off if your going to replace that to, it will slide off the spindels when the caliper is removed... put the new pads in place and slide the caliper back on and put the 2 bolts back in to hold the caliper in place.

How do you change front pads on Mazda rx8?

Jack up the car. Take off your tire. Find the bolt on the back of the caliper and take it off. This should release the caliper, pull the caliper off the disc. Now you should be able to take the pad out. Replace the pad. You'll need a special tool to reset the caliper. As the brakes wear down, the caliper gets tighter so the brakes still work. I'm not sure exactly what its called, but you can borrow one from auto zone. Follow the instructions that come with it to reset the caliper. Slide the caliper back over the disc. If it doesn't go on, you need to reset the caliper more. Put the relese bolt back in. Put your tire back on. Drive slowly and test the brakes. Hope that helps at least a little bit.

How do you change the breaks on a 1995 Mustang Gt?

The rear brakes you need a 3/8 standard wrench to open two bolts retaining the caliper. The piston caliper requires a special tool to "wind " it or screw it back in order to install the new brake pads. DO NOT PRESS THE CALIPER PISTON BACK. You have to "screw" or rotate it. Is there a Caliper tool for rear brakes on aurora?

Up to about 1999, no. Only needed a large C clamp to push the piston back in the cylinger. After 2000 some rear brakes have the the screw type piston which requires you to un-screw the caliper back to the un-used pad position.

Lubricate all caliper slide pins, any contact points with caliper bracket and caliper piston contact points with back side of brake pads. do not lubricate pad friction area or rotor.
