If a nail is not hit square on the top by the hammer it will bend and there is a likelihood that the wood will be damaged by hammer marks or the bent nail.
So when you go to hammer it in the wood it goes in properly, if it had a blunt end it wouldn't ease in as well. Hope this helps :)
