The concept of jihad does not affect Westerners in the Arab World. It may affect Westerners outside of the Arab World and it may affect non-Muslims within the Arab World, but Westerners within the Arab World are generallly untouched.

It is worth noting that there are two types of jihad in Islam. The Greater Jihad is the internal struggle that every Muslim is supposed to go through between choosing what are moral actions and what are selfish/immoral actions. The Lesser Jihad is the struggle to make Islam the dominant religion of people in all places or, barring that, to make Islam the sovereign religion in all places.

The Greater Jihad applies exclusively to Muslims since this a religious provision unique to them. Western Muslims who happen to live in the Arab World are required to perform the Greater Jihad by the same religious dictates as Arab Muslims, but it should not cause problems for either of them.

The Lesser Jihad primarily applies outside of the Islamic World, in what is termed the "Dar al-Harb", since those are the areas where Islam is not the dominant religion and Islam is not the sovereign religion. As a result, the Lesser Jihad affects Westerners in their own countries, with extremist organizations like al-Muhajirun in the UK and similar organizations advocating for Islamic governance and the suppression of those critical of Islam's beliefs or practices. There is also the belief that Islam should be enshrined and have superior standing in "Dar al-Islam" or the Islamic World, which results in extremist violence against Christian, Jewish, Baha'i, the weaker sect of Islam in the country (Shiite or Sunni), and other religious minorities in the Arab World. This is because these minorities want real equality as opposed to this superior-inferior position. Since the squabble here is political and since Westerners are foreigners who have no real skin in the game, the violence and antagonism reserved for the minority religions is not visited on Westerners since it would have no purpose.

Is jihad dying for your religion?

No. Esteshhaad (إستشهاد) or martyrdom is dying in defense of Islam. As for Islamic concept of Jihad (جهاد), there are two types. As concerns the Greater Jihad, which is an introspective journey to conquer your internal demons and follow the Divine Laws more closely than previously, there should be no violence that derives from this jihad. As concerns the Lesser Jihad, this is usually in the form of warfare between Muslims and Non-Muslims or other Muslims. This jihad is almost necessarily violent, unless the actor chooses to use non-violent protest or debate as his form of jihad. Of course, many people who fight in a Lesser Jihad will die for Islam. When a person dies, he will be a Shaahed (شاهد) or martyr according to the concept of Esteshhaad. With the exception of suicide bombers, though, most "jihad-fighters" or Mujahedin (مجاهدين) do not fight with the intention of dying.

Is jihad the struggle to make Islam the leading religion of the world?

"Jihad" means struggle. Muslims use the word to mean several different kinds of struggle, but most westerners know the word in the context of a holy war. _________________________________________ Jihad never means in Islam holy war and never intended by Juhad to make Islam the leading religion of the world. Jihad means struggle to do the good and the struggle to to follow God commands as not to do furnication, not to cheat, not to be violent, to be kind to your neighbor, to be forgiving, to maintain good morals, ... etc. This is called the major Jihad. Do Sunnis and Shiites both believe in jihad?

YES. Jihad is a Qur'anic injunction, so there is no difference between the Sunni and Shiite views of Jihad. The only Islamic group that rejects Jihad as a general concept is the Ahmadiyya community, who strictly view Jihad as an internal struggle. Both Sunnis and Shiites see Jihad as a tenet of Islam and a religious duty to strive in the way of God. There are two general ways to do this, the Greater Jihad and the Lesser Jihad. The Greater Jihad is an introspective journey to conquer your internal demons and follow the Divine Laws more closely than previously; this kind of jihad should be entirely peaceful. The Lesser Jihad refers to conflicts and confrontations between Muslims and Non-Muslims or other Muslims, which often erupt in war, but can also be performed through non-violent protests, debate, and advocacy. It is the Lesser Jihad which is often cast as a Holy War.

How long has jihad been around?

In Islamic concept, Jihad means "to strive against". It is divided into three parts; Jihad against one's own soul and temptations, Jihad against ignorance in the form of verbal communication and Jihad against non-believers in the form of physical violence. If we read the above-mentioned paragraph closely, one can assume that Jihad has been in this world ever since man has been; conquering his lust, fighting wars, arguing against one another in the advocacy of his religion. It is however, a common misconception, to believe that Jihad comprises only of "wars".
