All branches of the US Government are designed to further the interests of its citizens.
The executive branch of the US Government is the branch that carries out the laws of the country and as per law regulates what the US Constitution has mandated are the functions of the executive branch.
Here are a few examples of the way the executive branch helps the US citizens:
1. The Justice Dept. controls the FBI, and helps solve crimes and is involved with anti terrorism activities;
2. The Dept of Agriculture helps farmers and also ensures that that meat, vegetables & fruits are up to quality standards;
3. The Federal Drug Administration tests new drugs to insure that they are safe & effective; and
4. Under the control of the US President, the US armed forces are charged with protecting the nation from foreign attacks.

Power maintained by the legislative branch over the executive branch is to help keep the executive in check. The legislative has the power to veto executive polices and can also impeach the president and other executive officers.
