During the pandemic of 2009 governments of the world mandated monitoring and reporting by medical entities whenever a case was identified. These results were in turn reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) for tracking and tally. In the US, a monitoring system was already loosely in place in each state for all communicable disease monitoring and reporting for public safety. During the pandemic, this was tightened and every state was required to monitor and report weekly after the medical entities reported to them. These results were reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and to WHO. Other governments of the world had their own specific requirements, and those who were members of WHO all also reported to that world organization for compilation of the numbers. This reporting was cumbersome and time consuming for medical entities and states and once the pandemic H1N1 influenza was understood and a vaccine was developed, the strenuous reporting requirements were backed down to the pre-pandemic system. No counts are currently being kept of this type of flu separately from the reporting of all "flu-like illnesses" in the monitoring system from before the pandemic.

On the lighter and Science Fiction side:

They have microchips inserted into all of our brains at birth which are able to keep a track of illness.

How great is the risk of swine flu becoming a pandemic?

"On the basis of available evidence and these expert assessments of the evidence, the scientific criteria for an influenza pandemic have been met. I have therefore decided to raise the level of influenza pandemic alert from Phase 5 to Phase 6.The world is now at the start of the 2009 influenza pandemic." The transcripts of the Press Conference can be read (or videos watched) at the WHO site: http://www.who.int/mediacentre/influenzaAH1N1_presstranscript_20090611.pdf It is important to note that this does not indicate an increase in the severity, just that the criteria for Phase 6 regarding the spread of the Novel H1N1 Influenza have been met. This puts in to place additional steps by WHO and Nations' plans for control and prevention in such a widespread situation of pandemic.
