The iPad has a Wi-Fi chip built-in. You simply go to settings, Wi-Fi, then select the network and enter the password (if applicable).

The iPad 3G has a GSM radio which users can optionally sign up for a no-contract data plan which will allow the iPad to use the SIM card's (AT&T) cell phone towers as internet just like any smartphone.
