Iceland is a place where, because of large amounts of lava extrusion, the ocean floor is, in effect, above sea level, making it easy to study ocean floor spreading. You can affix strain gauges on many parts of the spreading ridge.

∙ 13y agoIceland sits directly atop the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This ridge is the division between to tectonic plates, at the northern point of the North American Plate and the Eurasian Plate. A group of scientists from Woods Hole established in 1947 that these two plates are moving apart. This was supported by the work of geologist Bruce Heezen, and Harry Hammond Hess of Princeton and Robert Dietz from the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1960. Robert Coats of the USGS supported this that same year with his work on the subduction of the Aleutian Islands.
As a result of straddling the two plates, Iceland is geologically very active, as evidenced by the latest eruption of the volcano near Hvolsvollur that cancelled and delayed flights across Europe in the spring of 2010. Additionally, the island of Iceland grows by 2-20 centimeters a year due to the separation of the plates alone.
