How does the old universe conflict with what the Bible says?

Strictly speaking, the scientific age of the earth does not conflict with the creation stories in Genesis, since they do not actually say that God created the earth itself. That is to say: they do in most modern English translations, but as long ago as the eleventh century CE, the influential Jewish scholar, Rashi, said that Genesis 1:1 should be read, "When God began to create ..." or "In the beginning of God's creation ... However, the scientific age of the universe does conflict with the creation stories. Genesis chapter 1 says that God placed lights (sun, moon and stars) in the firmament, just above the earth, apparently only around 6000 years ago. The real age of the universe in 13.7 billion years. The planets and the moon are around four and a half billion years old. The sun, although a relatively young star, is much older.
