Adding nutrients is the way in which humus affects the soil in area.

Specifically, humus is dark-colored, fresh-smelling, nutrient-rich organic material. It makes the soil more fertile in environmentally friendly ways. Its use therefore results in improved soil structure and texture through its function as a fertilizer as well as support to proper heat and moisture levels through its function as an amendment and a mulch.
