because if you live by a river or lake, when it rains, the river will overflow and possibly the water from the river will go in your house causing death or severe injuries. Also take this for example [ this REALLY HAPPENED. I play Baseball. And the fields I play on are right by a river. When hurricane Irene came, the river overfload. All the water from the river went on to the baseball fields. The houses by the river, became overfloaed and 3 children died and 2 adults [ they were not in the same family]. but we fixed up the fields in about 2 weeks and thank god baseball season wasn't then! to this day I play baseball on the fields i just told you about. i am on the Yankees and our record is 2-2

Human pollute rivers by dumping in sewage and industrial waste. They deplete the water by pumping it out to irrigate their crops and industrial uses. They dam them up to form lakes for recreation.
