The country, India, gives a sense of belonging to Hinduism, as hindus make 80% of the population here, though India is a secular democracy and people of other faiths as just as welcome. We have all our religiously important places, revered mountains, and rivers in this country. The festivals give us a sense of identity as we celebrate our important festivals, Holi (the color festival), Diwali (the festival of lights), and various others like the birth days of Lords Rama, Krishna, Ganesha, and the annual home-coming of Goddess Durga. The literature, the dramas enacted at the time of festivities, the dances, the music, give us a sense of identity as hindus. The street corner temples give us a sense of identity when we gather in the morning and evening for prayers. The food that we use on particular festivals gives us a sense of identity. Hindu life in India is intricately woven with these. Even the funeral grounds where the rich and famous, and the poor and unknown, are cremated, hindus as well as sikhs, buddhists, and jains, also give us an identity as one people.

∙ 13y agoSimple things. Care for your elders, so hindus have a joint family. Sons do not move out of parental homes after marriage. The elders are never uncared and lonely. Arranged marriage, so both the families are involved (sort of responsible) if marital discord happens and try to remove that. Result, Indian divorce rate is one of the lowest in the world. The family is not disrupted. Etc.
