The typical recommendation is to arrive to the airport about 2 hours before you scheduled flight, though most people are okay with arriving 60min-90minutes before their flight. Flight delays, long lines to check in, baggage check lines, getting picked to be searched, and getting behind someone who appears as though they've never been through airport security before can really slow things down. These events are out of your control, thus the reason for the 2 hour early arrival.
If you're going to push it on time, here are some helpful hints;
-Pack the night before. It will give you time to remember the things you may have forgot, saving you a trip back home when you should be on your way to the airport.
-Keep any metal you might want to be wearing in a plastic bag until you have passed through the security screening portion of the terminal.
-Check online to make sure your flight is on time. If it's not, you may want to reschedule. You might even have to jump on an earlier flight. Hopefully you're already packed!
-Leave early if you're traveling during rush hour. Might want to avoid freeways or main roads like MLK Blvd or Broadway if possible.
-Take a taxi. Parking in the garage can take up much needed extra time. Taxis can take you right up to the entrance.
-Triple check that you have all your documents (ie passport, photo ID, travel arrangements/tickets, etc) and YOUR WALLET!
