Much of New York City is either on the ocean or very close. A significant portion of Queens and Staten Island is on the Atlantic Ocean; Manhattan Island is surrounded by water and only about a half mile from the open ocean; and large parts of Brookyln are bounded by Sheepshead Bay, which is adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean.
It is right there and that is one reason Ellis Island was established because the ships came in from Europe and they could process the new immigrants as they came off the ships.
New York City is on the coast -- at least it has salt water in the rivers when the tide comes in. Brooklyn has salt-water beaches.
It's hard to know what you mean by 'coast'.

Moderating Effects - effect that large climate over nearby land areas. Winter temperatures are warmer and summer temperatures are warmer and summer temperatures are cooler than areas located away from large water bodies. The result is a small annual temperature range.
Jellyfish get rid of waste by ejecting it from their bodies. It is then released into the water and allowed to wash away.

During the day the land gets is heated fast, but the water takes a while to heat up. At night, water cools down right away, as does land, land absorbs heat faster than water and can also gets cooler faster.
The great plains are far away from any body of water that can serve as a heat sink to moderate temperatures. Areas near the oceans or large lakes have their temperatures moderated because the water can soak up some of the heat to keep temperatures down - evaporating some of the water to absorb heat without heating up. In the winter, large bodies of water can serve as heat reservoirs that can release energy back into the air as it cools down. Large bodies of water can also serve as a source of water vapor that can form into clouds over the land and thus shield it from the heat of the sun when it is hot and hold in warmth at night when it is cold. The great plains don't have this feature.
The closer you are to a large body of water the more mild the weather is going to be. The farther you are away from the large body of water the more extreme your weather is going to get.
It was an advantage because reptiles no longer had to stay near bodies of water and could live in more environments than amphibians.

it is when water molecules in the water form a 'wall'.Pond skaters have legs that spread out away from their bodies, lowering the pressure exerted by their weight and not breaking the surface tension of the water
