To my knowledge, the sense of smell requires that an odor MUST be inhaled in order to sense [or "smell"] it. Therefore, cats, dogs, humans, etc., cannot smell past the entrance of their noses. There is no distance in the ability to smell. On the other hand, among animals, there is a distinct difference in the sensitivity of their abilities to detect minute odors, and this part of the answer is outside of my knowledge, and hopefully will be added when an expert improves this answer.

well i live in the country and i have over 32 cats and the farthest my cats have ever roamed is: when they are hunting they usually don't go far past your property, when they are leaving because they got scared off by a bigger cat the females will usually run until they find a male and then stay with him and become a wild cat, a male will usually run until he finds a house with many cats and make himself at home...i hope that was helpful, i did my best!!!

Cats will roam at least a mile or two maybe more unless or until they are captured by coyotes, fox, wild cats, other predators or people who do not want stray cats on their property that's why I protect my cats and keep them safe at home where I know they are safe. Yes my cats would love to roam, most will say it's natural for the cats to roam but the cats do not know of the dangers out there beyond their home but I do. I love my cats so I will protect them by keeping them safe at home. It makes me so sad when I see someones stray cats roaming freely because there are many predators out there that could destroy those cute little animals.

Why do you smell things?

Well, you smell things because you have a nose. Your mom and dad produced your nose so you can smell delicious, and somewhat nasty things. The little hairs in your nose help you smell also. Well, that's about it. and remember, ALWAYS keep your nose clean so you can smell!
