Garmish is north of Munich and the Black Forest is in central Germany. A 4-5 hour drive apart. Both have a certain charm. If you go to Garmish make sure you visit the King Lugwrick hunting lodge. It is well worth seeing. He built a fake grotto with a lake and swan boat inside. He had a dinning room that was completely mirrored and the table came up from the floor into the room. Garmish is a lovely area and looks like the typical German alp town. When you get into central Germany make sure you visit Rothenburg, the oldest walled city in Europe. The town is charming and the wall is complete. Heidelberg is also worth seeing, but the castle there doesn't have much in it but empty rooms with the ceramic heaters. Along the roads into Heidelberg are apple trees and some wonderful spots to stop and have a picnic. If you are traveling by train the German trains are efficient and on time.
There are many places to see in Germany. I lived there 5 years and never did see all of it. The Black Forest, Neuswanstein, Linderhoff, Garmish, Rothenburg, castles of all types and sizes, and other historical sites are all worth a trip.
