It depends on the level of the sonogram and its purpose. Looking at veins and things of that nature, they're reliable. When it comes to determining a baby's size - they'll give you a decent range ... but they are not very accurate nor can they be fully reliable.
About a week maximum. Normally though, they are accurate to 1 day.

Most ultrasound machines don't list how far along you are on the pictures that are printed. The technician that is running the machine can have the computer calculate the age of the fetus using measurements.

No one is able to hear ultrasound; the frequency of the sound used is far higher than the audible limit of any person or animal. A sonographer will conduct an ultrasound. Ultrasound in the same way that bats navigate - by listening to echos. ultrasound is reflected in propotion to the density of soft tissues. an ultrasound displays the results of these echos.
It is unlikely that they would be that far off. They're often off by a couple of days or weeks, but not usually 1 1/2 months off. I strongly suggest that you speak to your doctor about it for more information.
At this stage, yes the ultrasound can be off by 10 days. Mine was off by ten days the other way, that is I thought I was 18 weeks and the ultrasound said 16 and a half. I knew when I had conceived because my husband had been away on a trip.
