On 1325, the year Mexico-Tenochtitlan was founded, most of the Valley of Mexico was covered by oak and pine forests; the center of the valley was dominated by the Lake Texcoco. Tenochtitlan was founded on one of several swampy islands within the lake; in order to grow their city, the Aztecs relied on a "chinampa" system, with which small artificial islands are built and filled with dirt to provide solid ground for agriculture. At that time, the valley had a population of less than 10,000 people, and the whole territory of present-day Mexico had a population of 10-20 million people.

By 2017, the whole valley is part of greater Mexico City. From the ancient forests, only some small protected areas remain; especially to the south and west of the city. The Texcoco Lake was dessicated by the Spanish conquistadors, and only a small swampy area to the northeast of the city remains and is called as such. Nowadays, the valley is inhabited by 21 million people and the whole country has a population of some 130 million people.
