Major-General Lachlan Macquarie - 1762 - 1 July 1824 - was the Governor of New South Wales, Australia from 1810 to 1821. He had a leading role in the development of the colony. He was born on the small island of Ulva off the west coast of the island of Mull in Scotland. He is considered to have had a crucial influence on the changes that took New South Wales from being a penal colony to a free settlement and so he played a major role in the shaping of Australian society in the early nineteenth century. He is buried on the island of Mull and an inscription on his tomb describes him as "The Father of Australia".
