Dynamite once consisted only of nitroglycerine and an absorbent material. It now rarely contains nitroglycerin, but uses a combination of other explosive materials, powdered metals, etc. The result is a safer product, a wider range of energy and characteristics, and fewer health problems for the people using it (nitroglycerin headaches are VERY bad)

Several thousand TONS of explosives are used each day in the US for mining and construction. Your question is rather vague- if you can refine it, we may do a better job of answering it. PS- the US did use a form of dynamite as a military weapon for a very brief time in the late 1800s, in cannon known as Dynamite Guns. They did not work out well, and were quickly dropped. The Navy had one ship that had special cannon that used high pressure steam to fire a dynamite filled shell.
