A bad one if anything. America had been defeated for the first time (arguably) and Communism had come up on top. By the wars end however, the USA did its first joint mission in space with the USSR leaving some hope that peace would prevail. Unfourtantly American's morale was low. The USA was supposed to be number 1 and here they came out as number 2.
Only the US Military knew about Vietnam in the 50's.

There was terrible political division in the US on the question of whether the US should be fighting in Vietnam or not, and great bitterness about the cost of the war in both money and lives. One consequence of this was that the military draft was discontinued. There was too much opposition to the practice of forcing people to fight against their will in wars that they did not believe to be justified. To this day, the memory of the Vietnam War acts as a terrible example of how US military intervention can go wrong, and the US has become more cautious.
