Early Situation Comedies were based on "radio sit-coms", (Lucy, Jack Benny, and Life of Riley). During the day-time hours, children could watch old Cartoons that originally aired at the Theater, introduced by "Uncle _____"; House-Wives would watch poorly produced Soap Operas, (sponsored by laundry "soaps"); Men would watch sports.
Not everyone had a TV, so people would invite their friends over to watch television. My mom says that she used to watch farm reports, because it was the only thing on in the morning, (3 channels; Dumont, NBC & CBS). Fox signed on in the late 80's, during a writer's strike, (featured Summer Football).
