Former communist hardliners have challenged the democratically elected people in former Soviet republics by stating that democracy has not worked. For the most part, their statements are having little effect.
When Russia went communist following the Bolshevik Revolution, it became known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR or Soviet Union). Russia is now an Illiberal Democracy as opposed to a Communist Dictatorship. Most former Soviet States sit on the continuum from Illiberal Democracy and Dictatorship, but none are Communist anymore.
Democracy means "rule by the people". Republic means "rule by elected officials". Since the officials in a republic are elected, it is a form of democracy. Not all democracies are republics (direct democracy is not), and not all "republics" are actually democracies ("Islamic republics", for example). The United States is a republic and representational democracy.

Not, not all republics are democracies.
They are not the same A Republic is operated under democratic principles, but Republics are not a democracy.
Most of them are republics. Some are federal republics, some are centralized republics; there is one communist regime in Latin America (Cuba).
The SOVIET UNION split into fifteen republics in 1991 when the Communist government in Moscow was unable to hold onto power.
Republics are normally democratic.

A republic is a political system which is not ruled by an emperor, a king or aristocrats (such as princes or dukes). That is all that is required to define a political system as a republic. A republic can have all sorts of regimes: democracy, authoritarianism, dictatorship and totalitarianism. Many authoritarian rulers were in charge of republics. Dictators such as Marcus (Philippines) Mubarak (Egypt) and many military dictatorships (such as those in Chile and Argentina) were in charge of republics. Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia were republics. Communist China and North Korea are republics.
