A republic is a political system which is not ruled by an emperor, a king or aristocrats (such as princes or dukes). That is all that is required to define a political system as a republic. A republic can have all sorts of regimes: democracy, authoritarianism, Dictatorship and totalitarianism.

Many authoritarian rulers were in charge of republics. Dictators such as Marcus (Philippines) Mubarak (Egypt) and many military dictatorships (such as those in Chile and Argentina) were in charge of republics. Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia were republics. Communist China and North Korea are republics.
