Polar bears are adapted to their environment by having;

  1. They have smaller ears (to reduce heat loss through them).
  2. Their large size means the surface area to volume ratio is small, and this helps them to conserve body heat.
  3. Thick fur and layer of fat under the skin (known as blubber) to conserve body heat.
  4. They builds up layers of blubber during summer and can then use it as an energy store in winter when less food is available.
  5. A polar bear's fur is a translucent, hollow white that helps in camouflage and insulation.
  6. The pads of its paws have stiff hairs that help with traction and insulation, and the front paws are webbed to aid in swimming.
