During the war, women were left to run and defend their husband's land, home and farms. Unsure if they spouses would even come back, they had to make the adjustment of being independent and at the same time, keep to their family responsibilities (home, children, etc). Some women decided to join their husband's in military combat and were rewarded when the war was over. The main thing that changed was the value of education for a woman. Before the war, a woman's place was in the home and any form of education was considered taboo. After the war, a woman was expected to get a 'formal' education in order to pass on the knowledge, mainly of the value of patriotism, to her children.

Apart from having to work hard for somebody else, with punishment waiting if their masters felt like it, they were also subject to sexual abuse.

They were treated just about the same as men, as well as children. Although, women were often rapped.

How did whites treat the slaves?

Most of the whites treated the slaves horribly. Some treated them fair, but most treated them horribly. They weren't treated like the whites, there were basically treated like dirty rags. The slaves were taken away from their families and never saw them again unless they were freed or ran away. When slaves ran away the got caught. The slave owners killed the slaves by beating them to death.. Nobody wants to be treated like that. They even had little kids working as slaves, the kids only got two shirts a year, and if they got worn out they wouldnt have to go bare naked. Life wasn't easy as a slave.
