What you're describing sounds a lot like a sticking thermostat. They're cheap, just replace the thermostat and gasket.

I think you are talking about "hot tanking" which is a method used to clean the block out, once disassembled.
No more then 0.060 and then it starts trying to RUN HOT on you.
You can fix your 1985 Chevy Corvette by replacing the thermostat. If the automobile still runs hot, you might need to replace the cylinder head gasket.

if it is coolant and not condensation. I would say you have a blown head gasket. the coolant will smell sweet. but if it is a bad head gasket it will run hot also.
Water pump, or fan clutch, or head gasket. These area all possibilities.
