Public speaking in ancient Rome was not just getting up and talking, it was oratory. Anyone who aspired to a political position or even a position as a pleader (lawyer) went to Greece to study oratory with the Greek teachers. They had certain gestures, stances, and voice inflections that had to be used. They also committed their speeches to memory, no teleprompters or notes.
