As a public speaker, one of the things that I really deliberately do is listen more. Before a speech starts, I arrive early and try to speak with the members of the audience. I listen to signals that they may send me.

Listening is very important because it opens you up for more opportunities to serve your audience's needs.

That is what communication is all about: serving other people's needs. That's what public speaking is: the audience's needs come first.

So even if you've prepared something for your audience, listening more to your audience's needs will improve your speech. Listen more.
