Part of the Reason Ziggurats were so important was that all the food was stored there, and the priests counted all of it and decided how much food each person should get. Of course, it was harder to do that before record keeping was invented. They wrote in Cuneiform. : )

Ziggurats had symbolized its elevated relationship with the people of the city literally putting it above the routine of everyday life. Ziggurats also put their priests closer to the heavens, where they could better communicate with the deity so he could hear their prayers and speak his will.(9) Native people were respect their priests and their places. The other fact of respect to ziggurat form was the actual size of the building which was a huge building to compare to the houses of native people.

In addition. Ziggurats were used to store excess grain in case of flood or famine.
