Tc99m and I131 arent used in thyroid uptake and scan. Specically I123 is used to evaluate thyroid uptake and is also used to perform a scan mostly in addition to a pinhole collimator. Tc99m can be used just for the purpose of size and shape of thyroid but ultrasound is more specific for that and does not introduce a dose of radiation to the patient.

Iodine is used in both the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disease.

When there is a thyroid nodule that needs further evaluation, a patient might undergo a test called a radioactive iodine uptake. During this test, a small amount of radioactive iodine is swallowed. Since iodine is absorbed by the thyroid gland, this test helps to determine if a nodule is an active part of the thyroid tissue or not.

Iodine is also part of treatment options for thyroid conditions hyperthyroidism and Graves' disease. Radioactive iodine is administered to help slowly destroy the thyroid gland, which then slows down the production of thyroid hormones.

Iodine 131 is used to treat overactive thyroid glands. It is radioactive, and destroys a part of the thyroid gland. The result is that the remaining gland can function at a normal level.

What is the treatment for diffuse thyroid disease?

Radioactive iodine is a treatment option used for those with hyperthyroidism and the thyroid autoimmune condition Graves' disease. Radioactive iodine treatment can also be used for those dealing with thyroid cancer. It is given orally, usually in a capsule form, and absorbed in the bloodstream. It then enters the thyroid gland and gradually destroys the thyroid cells, which will cause the thyroid to become hypothyroid.Related Article: Radioactive Iodine Treatment and Hyperthyroidism

A what treatment is the oral administration of radioactive iodine to destroy thyroid cells?

If you have hyperthyroidism which is bad for you iron or iodine?

If you have hyperthyroidism, neither iron nor iodine is bad for you. Excessive consumption of either can be dangerous however, and since iodine is fuel the thyroid uses to produce thyroid hormone, anti-thyroid drugs (ATD's) are used to help the body lower its ability to use iodine in the thyroid. Iodine is necessary for life however, as is iron. For appropriate diagnosis and treatment of thyroid dysfunction, please seek the help of a board certified endocrinologist who specializes in thyroid problems.

What is the chemical used in Grave's disease to destroy tissue of the thyroid gland?

Grave's Disease is an autoimmune thyroid disorder in which your body is rejecting and destroying your thyroid. There is no way to stop the process, but you can slow it down and lessen the symptoms of the disease. If you go to an endocrinologist you will be told to take radioactive iodine to destroy your remaining thyroid tissue, and then you will be put on synthetic thyroid hormones that you must take for the rest of your life. The normal end result of Grave's disease is a total loss of thyroid tissue. Radioactive iodine treatment just gets you to that point in a couple of weeks or months rather than having to wait years. There are natural approaches to treatment for Grave's disease as well. The goal of natural therapies is to support your body while your thyroid is being destroyed by lowering your antibody levels and reducing your symptoms. You may or may not need thyroid hormones (determined by blood tests) during portions of this treatment. The benefit of natural treatments is that you can avoid the negative side effects of radiation.

What is the best food for hypothyroid?

There are many reasons a thyroid may be under-functioning. What to eat should be influenced by the specific problem that is causing the hypoactivity of the thyroid gland. A balanced diet is important for all medical conditions. However, if the reason for the hypothyroid condition is insufficient iodine, then a diet richer in iodine may be helpful. Japanese research has shown that increased selenomethionine in the diet may help autoimmune hypothyroidism. Research also suggests that decreased iodine consumption may be helpful in remission of autoimmune thyroid disease, including Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
