In primary and secondary schooling, Philippine literature is included in a subject called Filipino Subject. This specific subject encompasses Filipino language classes to the study of different Philippine literature. During elementary years, the Filipino subject is mostly about the study of the Filipino language - from the origins and history of the language itself to grammar and correct usage. In high school, the Filipino subject is mostly about Philippine literature, with great emphasis given to famous literary pieces of Francisco Baltazar ( or Balagtas ) and Philippine national hero, Jose Rizal. Freshmen and sophomore high school students study on the works of Baltazar while the works of Rizal are discussed in the Filipino subject classes of the juniors and the seniors. The study of Philippine literature for college and university students would depend on what courses they take.
