What is a full floating axle?

In a full-floating axle, the axle bearing is placed on the outside of the axle housing. This places all the vehicle weight on the axle housing and none on the axle itself. This is important for the front axle which is generally a short shaft. In the semi-floating axle, the axle bearing is placed in the axle housing and the axle carries some of the load of the vehicle. The main advantage of the semi-floating is that it is simpler (i.e. cheaper). Courtesey of: http://www.m38a1.ca/axles.html Sourced by: Paul Henderson, Donegal, Ireland.

How do you remove rear axle of 1999 ford expedition?

Rear Axle Axle Shaft, Bearing and SealRemoval & Installation Ford 8.8 Inch and 9.75-Inch Ring Gear # Raise and safely support the vehicle on jack stands. # Remove the wheels from the brake drums. # Place a drain pan under the housing and drain the lubricant by loosening the hosing cover. # Remove the locks securing the brake drums to the axle shaft flanges and remove the drums. # Remove the housing cover and gasket. # Remove the side gear pinion shaft lock bolt and the side gear pinion shaft. # Push the axle shaft inward and remove the C-locks from the inner end of the axle shafts. Temporarily replace the shaft and lock bolt to retain the differential gears in position. # Remove the axle shaft with a slide hammer. Be sure the seal is not damage by the splines on the axle shaft. # Remove the bearing and oil seal from the housing. Both the seal and bearing can be removed with a slide hammer. # Two types of bearings are used on some axles, one requiring a press fit and the other a loose fit. A loose fitting bearing does not necessary indicate excessive wear. # Inspect the axle shaft housing and axle shafts for burrs or other irregularities. Replace any work or damage parts. A light yellow color on the bearing journal of the axle shaft is normal, and does not require replacement of the axle shaft. Slight pitting and wear is also normal. # Lightly coat the wheel bearing rollers with axle lubricant. Install the bearings in the axle housing until the bearing seats firmly against the shoulder. # Wipe all lubricant from the oil seal bore, before installing the seal. # Inspect the original seals for wear. If necessary, these may be replaced with new seals, which are pre-packed with lubricant and do not require soaking. Install: # Install the oil seal. # Remove the lock bolt and pinion shaft. Carefully slide the axle shafts into place. Be careful that you do not damage the seal with the splined end of the axle shaft. Engage the splined end of the shaft with the differential side gear. # Install the axle shaft C-locks on the inner end of the axle shafts and seat the C-locks in the counterbore of the differential side gears. # Rotate the differential pinion gear until the differential pinion shaft can be installed. Install the differential pinion shaft lock bolt. Tighten to 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm). # Install the brake drum on the axle shaft flange. # Install the wheel and tire on the brake drum and tighten the attaching nuts. # Clean the gasket surface of the rear housing and install a new cover gasket and the housing cover. Some covers do not use gasket. On these models, apply a bead of silicone sealer on the gasket surface. The beat should run specified lubricant to bring the lubricant level to ½ in. (12.7 mm) below the filler hole.

Can you describe the pinion shaft in the rear end that has to be lowered to slightly push in axles to release c pin?

is this in a gm vehicle? if it is , it is not the pinion shaft that needs to be lowered.it is a square block , held in place with one bolt, inside the diff housing. this block holds end of axles apart. when this block is removed, you can then push axle shafts towards centre of vehicle to remove c-clip that prevents axle from sliding out of diff and axle housing. any good shop manuel will have a picture of this
