It differs slightly based on WHICH rifle- but in general- a cartridge of ammunition is placed in the chamber, and the action closed. Rifle is pulled into one shoulder, and supported by the opposite hand (right shoulder, left hand holding) The safety is placed in the off position. The front and rear sights are aligned with the target, and the trigger is pressed. This allows the firing pin to move forward under spring pressure, and strike the primer on the rear of the cartridge. The primer sends a jet of fire inside the cartridge case, igniting the gunpowder. Burning gunpowder produces rapidly expanding gasses, which push the bullet through the barrel. Spiral lines engraved on the inside of the barrel cause the bullet to spin, keeping it on course as it moves through the air.
