In their natural state forest fires periodically clear old growth to be removed so that new growth (an environment needed by many species) is present. Since people prevent forest fires there has to be a mechanism to renew the forests, this includes logging and replanting.
With regard to carbon sequestration, it is the new growth that removes the greatest amount of carbon dioxide. This is acomplished by logging and reforestation.
