Eczema is treated through various Skin Care routines. Eczema patients are required to use mild soap and moisturizers, take short, lukewarm showers, and they should find ways to reduce stress. These are stepping stones to maintaining a mild level of eczema. There are medications for mild levels of eczema:
Benadryl: Benadryl is an antihistamine. Eczema patients do itch, so anithistamines are a rudimentary over-the-counter (OTC) medicine to have handy (as they combat itchiness). Some antihistamines induce drowsiness (which can help if you have late-night itching fits).
Hydrocortisone: Hydrocortisone is a cream, gel, lotion, or spray this is used to reduce the itchiness that is caused by eczema, poison ivy, insect bites, poison sumac, laundry detergents, etc. A prescribed cream may be required if the eczema is more severe.
Corticosteroids: Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid; however, the doctor will more than likely prescribe an oral corticosteroid (and hydrocortisone isn't an oral corticosteroid). Corticosteroids work to suppress the immune system. They do this by preventing the body from attacking and destroying its own tissue (which it does in mild and severe cases of eczema).
UV Light Therapy: In severe cases of eczema, a patient may benefit from UV light therapy.
