There are many ways that friction is helpful while driving a car. Probably the most obvious one is the frictional force that exists between the tires and the road surface. If there was no friction, the car would not be able to move. The tires would simply spin in place. Various tire compounds will yield a different coefficient of friction dependent on the application (for example, you would want a higher coefficient of friction in racing slicks than you would need for street tires). There are areas of the car where reducing the coefficient of friction based on the specific materials used would be more helpful. For example, you would want as little friction as possible to occur between internal engine components like that between the piston rings and the cylinder wall because you want your engine to be more efficient (the engine doesn't have to work as hard to produce power if it doesn't have to work against it's own internal friction).
