The concept of fried ice cream can be related to the similar dessert, the baked Alaskan, which was developed in the 19th century.
It is typically found in Mexican restaurants and Japanese restaurants (they call it Ice Cream Tempura.)
Fried ice cream begins with scoops or balls of ice cream that are frozen quite hard. These frozen balls are then rolled in beaten eggs or egg whites and some sort of crumbs. Then the coated balls are quickly fried in very hot oil. The quick frying at high heat cooks the egg and crumb coating, making it crisp before the heat can melt the frozen ice cream inside.
Like most deep fried foods, you coat the ice cream in a batter and put it in the deep frier. However for only a few seconds as you just want to cook the batter not melt the ice cream.
